Dementia Si Uchawi Campaign
Because understanding saves lives.
In many parts of Kenya, dementia is still misunderstood.
When an elder begins to forget, wander, or behave differently, it’s too often blamed on witchcraft or spiritual forces. This dangerous myth has led to fear, isolation, and even violence - especially against older women.
“Dementia si uchawi” is our bold response to that reality.

Why This Campaign Matters
We’ve heard the stories.
Grandmothers accused of sorcery. Elders beaten, abandoned, or even killed. Families hiding their loved ones out of fear or shame.
All because no one explained that dementia is a disease - not a curse.
It doesn’t have to be this way.

🟪 What We’re Doing
Through this campaign, we are:
-
Educating communities using simple, relatable information about dementia
-
Holding forums in villages, churches, and public spaces to break the silence
-
Training caregivers and local leaders to spot symptoms early
-
Providing safe platforms for families to speak, share, and seek help
-
Engaging with cultural and religious leaders to change the narrative
-
Distributing posters, banners, and handouts that say clearly: Dementia si uchawi
