Our Story

DementiaAware Kenya was born out of a deeply personal journey. Our founder, Ms. Winnie Tsuma, cared for her mother who lived with dementia for many years, an experience that opened her eyes to the silence, stigma, and lack of support surrounding the condition in Kenya.

What began as confusion and worry at home quickly turned into a search for answers and support that simply didn’t exist.

In the course of caring for her mum, Ms. Winnie Tsuma encountered many other families struggling quietly with similar challenges; isolated, misinformed, and overwhelmed. In some communities, the signs of dementia were misinterpreted as witchcraft or spiritual affliction, leading to fear, discrimination, and even violence against the elderly.

Determined to turn her experience into action, she founded DementiaAware Kenya, a nonprofit committed to breaking the silence and creating a space where dementia is understood as a medical condition, not a curse or taboo.

What started as one woman’s response to a personal crisis has grown into a national movement of awareness, care, and advocacy.

Today, DementiaAware Kenya continues to walk with families, train communities, and push for inclusive policies; ensuring that no one faces dementia alone, and every voice is heard.
