Building awareness, ending stigma, and protecting our elders with dignity.
DementiaAware Kenya held a community outreach in Risavu Village to help families understand dementia and replace fear with knowledge. The session brought together residents, caregivers and local leaders who were eager to learn more about the condition and how it affects memory, behaviour and daily life. Participants engaged openly and asked questions that reflected the real challenges facing families with aging relatives.
Founder Winnie Tsuma and Palliative Care Nurse Emily Kache guided the conversation in a simple and relatable way. They explained that dementia is a medical condition of the brain and not a sign of witchcraft. Many community members shared personal stories and expressed relief at finally understanding behaviours they had struggled to interpret. The discussions highlighted the importance of empathy and patience when caring for older people.
Local leadership also spoke about the need to protect the elderly from stigma and harmful beliefs. They encouraged families to seek assistance when they notice signs of dementia and to support caregivers who shoulder most of the responsibility. The event ended with a strong call for unity, reminding the community that elders deserve love, safety and dignity.
